Folsom began as a gold rush town and kept the bones of one. Sutter Street still runs on its original line, and the historic district around it has been preserved rather than rebuilt: Leidesdorff Plaza, the railroad turntable and depot, and the truss bridge looking out over the American River.

It is the prettiest walkable downtown within an hour of the studio, and the lake above it is why so many Folsom families spend their weekends outdoors. It is also, thanks to a song written in 1955, one of the few small California towns the whole world can name.

Folsom is about forty-five minutes from the studio, the longest of the regular northern drives, so sessions here tend to be booked deliberately rather than conveniently — families who have seen the work and want the room, the wardrobe and the unhurried pace. Newborn sessions are photographed in the studio, where the temperature and the props are not left to chance.

For a family coming forty-five minutes each way, the shape of the day matters as much as the session. Newborn sessions run long by design — two to three hours, because a newborn sets the pace and no useful photograph has ever been made by hurrying one — so Folsom families are usually booked in the morning, with the private family room, the kitchenette and somewhere to feed and change already set up. Nobody sits in a waiting area. The drive is the only part of the day that runs to a schedule.
