The Studio

Worth the drive to Lodi

The Jesica Allen Photography studio in Lodi, CA, serving Stockton families

A world-class 3,000 square foot studio in the heart of downtown Lodi, built entirely around families — a private kitchenette, a private family living room, and a private changing and feeding room, plus a children's make-believe playspace to keep little ones happy through the session.

For newborn sessions the room is the whole point: held at eighty degrees, sound kept low, and every wrap, headband and prop laid out before you arrive. Nothing has to be fetched, and nobody has to wait with a cold baby. Stockton families arrive, settle in, and leave the rest to Jesica.

Stockton

A little about Stockton

Stockton sits on the edge of the California Delta and its thousand-odd miles of waterway, and the water changes the light — softer than the rest of the valley, and slower to go hard through the summer. It is the reason photographs made here look different from ones made twenty minutes inland.

The University of the Pacific was chartered in 1851, which makes it the oldest university in California, and its red-brick quads are the handsomest architecture for miles. Victory Park sits around the Haggin Museum, and the Miracle Mile still has the shopfronts and neon of the era it was built in.

Newborn sessions come to the Lodi studio, twenty minutes north — close enough that Stockton families are among the most frequent visitors on the calendar. Newborn work is studio work: the room is kept warm, the props are laid out before you arrive, and nothing about it depends on the weather over the Delta that morning.

Being twenty minutes away changes what is possible. Newborn sessions are held against a due date rather than a diary slot, and babies rarely read the diary, so a Stockton family can often take a date at a few days' notice when the baby comes early — which is more often than not. It also means a session that does not go to plan is recoverable: a baby who will not settle, a feed that runs long, and the answer is simply to try again next week rather than to write off a ninety-minute drive. Proximity is an underrated luxury in newborn work.

Stockton — good to know

Do you photograph Stockton families?

Yes — Stockton is part of our core service area, about 20 minutes south of Lodi. Stockton families book newborn sessions here every month.

Where do Stockton newborn sessions take place?

In the private Lodi studio. Newborn work needs steady warmth, a controlled room and every wrap and prop within reach, which is why it is not photographed in homes or outdoors.

When should Stockton families book a newborn session?

Reserve your date by your due date, ideally in the second or third trimester. Stockton-area newborn dates fill quickly because each one is held against a birth rather than a calendar slot.

Do we have to drive to Lodi?

Yes — about twenty minutes north, one of the shortest drives of anywhere served. Stockton is a genuinely underrated city to photograph from: it sits on the edge of the California Delta and its thousand-odd miles of waterway, and that water gives the whole place a softer light than the rest of the valley gets. Newborn sessions are studio-only, so there is no Stockton alternative, but twenty minutes with a sleeping newborn is a manageable morning by any measure. of anywhere served. Newborn sessions are studio-only, so there is no Stockton alternative, but twenty minutes with a sleeping newborn in the back is a manageable morning by any measure, and a great many Stockton families do it without thinking twice.

Why not photograph the baby at our house in Stockton?

Because newborn work needs conditions a house cannot hold. The room sits near eighty degrees for three hours, the light does not change while you work, and every wrap, prop and beanbag is within reach. A cold or unsettled baby will not curl into a single one of those poses, and no amount of driving to you fixes that. The studio exists to solve it.

How far ahead should we book?

In the second or third trimester, and by your due date rather than by a calendar date. Each newborn slot is held against a birth, so only a handful exist in any month and they are reserved long before the babies arrive. If you are reading this already holding a newborn, ask anyway — later sessions are a different set of pictures rather than a missed chance.

How long is the session, and can our older children be in it?

Two to three hours, paced by the baby, with feeds and changes built in. Older children are welcome and are usually photographed early, while they are still interested, then collected by whoever came with you. Twenty minutes back down the 99 afterwards, and most families are home before the afternoon has properly started.
