Serving Modesto

Timeless newborn portraits for Modesto families — photographed in a private studio in the heart of Lodi.

Families across Modesto trust Jesica Allen Photography with their most precious moments. For seventeen years and 227 five-star reviews, Jesica has photographed newborns, maternity, milestones, cake smashes, and families from Modesto and throughout the Central Valley.

Modesto is about 45 minutes south of Lodi, so every session is an easy trip to her private studio in downtown Lodi. Newborn dates are held by your estimated due date rather than by the calendar, so a handful of Modesto families reserve theirs each month — the earlier you reach out, the better.

The Studio

Worth the drive to Lodi

The Jesica Allen Photography studio in Lodi, CA, serving Modesto families

A world-class 3,000 square foot studio in the heart of downtown Lodi, built entirely around families — a private kitchenette, a private family living room, and a private changing and feeding room, plus a children's make-believe playspace to keep little ones happy through the session.

For newborn sessions the room is the whole point: held at eighty degrees, sound kept low, and every wrap, headband and prop laid out before you arrive. Nothing has to be fetched, and nobody has to wait with a cold baby. Modesto families arrive, settle in, and leave the rest to Jesica.

Modesto

A little about Modesto

Modesto has been announcing itself since 1912, when the arch went up at Ninth and I with Water Wealth Contentment Health spelled out in light bulbs. It still lights every evening, and it is still the best-known object in the city.

The town is George Lucas's, and the summer he put on film in American Graffiti is marked here every June — the cruise route runs the same streets it did then. The McHenry Mansion and the Victorian blocks around it are the quieter counterpart, and the almond and walnut orchards start a few minutes outside town in every direction.

Modesto is about forty-five minutes south of the studio, the furthest of the valley towns, so families here most often book the whole first year at once — newborn, sitter, and the cake smash. Newborn sessions are studio sessions, and being booked as a set means one planned drive a few times rather than a decision each time.

A drive this length is worth planning around rather than repeating blind, which is why Modesto families more often book the first year as a set than as three separate decisions. Newborn in the first fortnight, a sitter session around six to eight months when a baby can hold themselves up and has just discovered how funny they are, and the cake smash at a year. Three drives, agreed once, spread across the year — and each session builds on the last, because by the third one the baby knows the room and Jesica knows the baby.

Modesto — good to know

Do you photograph Modesto families?

Yes — Modesto is part of our core service area, about 45 minutes south of Lodi. Modesto families book newborn sessions here every month.

Where do Modesto newborn sessions take place?

In the private Lodi studio. Newborn work needs steady warmth, a controlled room and every wrap and prop within reach, which is why it is not photographed in homes or outdoors.

When should Modesto families book a newborn session?

Reserve your date by your due date, ideally in the second or third trimester. Modesto-area newborn dates fill quickly because each one is held against a birth rather than a calendar slot.

How far is Modesto from the studio?

About forty-five minutes north, a straightforward run. Modesto is a handsome town with more character than it usually gets credit for — the 1912 arch across Ninth and I still reads Water Wealth Contentment Health, which is a rather wonderful thing for a town to have promised itself.

Why does the session have to be at the studio?

Because newborn work needs a room held near eighty degrees for two or three hours, with steady light and every wrap and prop to hand. A cold or unsettled baby will not curl into a single one of those poses, and driving to Modesto cannot fix it.

When should we book?

Second or third trimester, held against your due date rather than a calendar date. Each newborn slot waits on a birth, so only a handful exist in any month and they are taken well before the babies arrive.

What is there to see in Modesto afterwards?

The arch at Ninth and I is worth the detour on the way home, and the Victorian mansion downtown is lovely. And Modesto is of course George Lucas's home town — American Graffiti was set here, and Graffiti Summer still fills the streets every June, which is a joy to photograph if your family session lands in it.
