Serving Modesto
Elegant maternity portraits for Modesto families — in the Lodi studio or outdoors, with a wardrobe of gowns to borrow.
Families across Modesto trust Jesica Allen Photography with their most precious moments. For seventeen years and 227 five-star reviews, Jesica has photographed newborns, maternity, milestones, cake smashes, and families from Modesto and throughout the Central Valley.
Modesto is about 45 minutes south of Lodi, so every session is an easy trip to her private studio in downtown Lodi. Maternity sessions sit best between 32 and 36 weeks, when the bump is round and you are still comfortable on your feet — so Modesto families tend to book early in the third trimester.
The Studio
Worth the drive to Lodi

A world-class 3,000 square foot studio in the heart of downtown Lodi, built entirely around families — a private kitchenette, a private family living room, and a private changing and feeding room, plus a children's make-believe playspace to keep little ones happy through the session.
For maternity sessions the wardrobe is the draw — a collection of flowing gowns in soft neutral tones to borrow rather than buy, in a range of sizes, with somewhere private to change and no rush about any of it. Modesto families arrive, settle in, and leave the rest to Jesica.

Sessions for Modesto families
Every session, all in one place
Modesto
A little about Modesto
Modesto has been announcing itself since 1912, when the arch went up at Ninth and I spelling Water Wealth Contentment Health in light bulbs. It still lights every evening, and it is still the best-known thing in the city.
The Victorian blocks around the McHenry Mansion are the quieter beauty, and the town is George Lucas's — the summer he filmed as American Graffiti is marked here every June along the same cruise route. It is a city with more character than it is usually given credit for.
For maternity sessions, though, the draw is outside town: almond and walnut orchards in every direction, at their best in the weeks either side of March. Modesto is about forty-five minutes south of the studio, the furthest of the valley towns, so a session here is worth building an afternoon around.
There is a rhythm to the orchards worth planning around. The almonds break white in the third week of February and hold a fortnight; the walnuts leaf out later and give deep green shade by May; and by October the whole lot turns gold before the leaves come down. Three quite different settings from the same rows, all within a few minutes of town. Given the forty-five minutes each way, most Modesto families pick the window first and the date second, which is the right order and produces better photographs than the reverse.
“Loved working with Jesica! It was our first time ever doing a professional photoshoot and she made the experience so memorable and wonderful! She is very sweet and explained everything very well.”

Modesto — good to know
Do you photograph Modesto families?
Yes — Modesto is part of our core service area, about 45 minutes south of Lodi. Modesto families book maternity sessions here every month.
Where do Modesto maternity sessions take place?
Either in the private Lodi studio or outdoors around Modesto and the Central Valley — whichever suits the look you want. Studio sessions have the wardrobe and the controlled light; outdoor sessions have the setting your family already knows.
When should Modesto families book a maternity session?
Between 32 and 36 weeks for the session itself, which means reaching out early in the third trimester. Multiples or modified activity are photographed earlier — say so and the date moves.
Where do maternity sessions happen in Modesto?
Downtown gives the town's best-known frame — the 1912 arch across Ninth and I, still reading Water Wealth Contentment Health — and the Victorian mansion nearby is genuinely handsome. Outside the town the orchards and open farmland give long golden hour with nothing behind you to argue with.
When is the best time of year?
Spring and October, either side of the valley summer. March gives blossom in the orchards outside town and May is lovely before the heat sets in; October gives the low light everybody wants. Midsummer sessions move to the last hour of the day, because a Modesto June afternoon is no place for a floor-length gown.
What is Graffiti Summer, and does it affect booking?
It is Modesto at its most joyful — George Lucas grew up here, American Graffiti was set here, and every June the town fills with the cars and the parade. It is marvellous to photograph, though downtown is busy through it, so maternity sessions in June are either built around it deliberately or moved out to the orchards.
Is the studio an option?
Certainly — about forty-five minutes north, with the gown wardrobe and light that does not depend on the sky. Plenty of Modesto families photograph outdoors in spring or October and come indoors for the rest, which gives two very different sets of pictures.
