Serving Sacramento

Elegant maternity portraits for Sacramento families — in the Lodi studio or outdoors, with a wardrobe of gowns to borrow.

Families across Sacramento trust Jesica Allen Photography with their most precious moments. For seventeen years and 227 five-star reviews, Jesica has photographed newborns, maternity, milestones, cake smashes, and families from Sacramento and throughout the Central Valley.

Sacramento is about 40 minutes north of Lodi, so every session is an easy trip to her private studio in downtown Lodi. Maternity sessions sit best between 32 and 36 weeks, when the bump is round and you are still comfortable on your feet — so Sacramento families tend to book early in the third trimester.

The Studio

Worth the drive to Lodi

The Jesica Allen Photography studio in Lodi, CA, serving Sacramento families

A world-class 3,000 square foot studio in the heart of downtown Lodi, built entirely around families — a private kitchenette, a private family living room, and a private changing and feeding room, plus a children's make-believe playspace to keep little ones happy through the session.

For maternity sessions the wardrobe is the draw — a collection of flowing gowns in soft neutral tones to borrow rather than buy, in a range of sizes, with somewhere private to change and no rush about any of it. Sacramento families arrive, settle in, and leave the rest to Jesica.

Sacramento

A little about Sacramento

Sacramento's tree canopy is among the densest of any American city, and for maternity work that matters more than it sounds: it turns hard afternoon sun into something usable a full hour before open ground becomes workable.

The American River Parkway runs for miles of that shade and is the obvious choice. The prettier one is McKinley Park's rose garden, which peaks through April and May, or the Victorian streets of Midtown and East Sacramento where the trees close over the road entirely. Old Sacramento's boardwalks and iron frontages are there too, though they photograph better early, before the crowds.

Sacramento is about forty minutes north of the studio, which is close enough that the gown wardrobe is a real option rather than a theoretical one. A good number of Sacramento families photograph outdoors in April or October and come to the studio in the months either side.

It is worth naming the rest of what the city offers, because most families only think of the parkway. The Capitol's grounds are an arboretum in their own right, planted with trees from around the world; Land Park has the ponds and the old oaks; and the grid of Midtown alleys, with their brick and iron and murals, gives an urban alternative to all that greenery for anyone who does not want a soft-focus field. Sacramento is a city with genuine variety in it, which for a maternity session means the pictures can look like a choice rather than a default.

Loved working with Jesica! It was our first time ever doing a professional photoshoot and she made the experience so memorable and wonderful! She is very sweet and explained everything very well.

Sacramento — good to know

Do you photograph Sacramento families?

Yes — Sacramento is part of our core service area, about 40 minutes north of Lodi. Sacramento families book maternity sessions here every month.

Where do Sacramento maternity sessions take place?

Either in the private Lodi studio or outdoors around Sacramento and the Central Valley — whichever suits the look you want. Studio sessions have the wardrobe and the controlled light; outdoor sessions have the setting your family already knows.

When should Sacramento families book a maternity session?

Between 32 and 36 weeks for the session itself, which means reaching out early in the third trimester. Multiples or modified activity are photographed earlier — say so and the date moves.

Where do outdoor maternity sessions happen in Sacramento?

Sacramento is a wonderful city to photograph in, and the canopy is why — among the densest of any American city. The American River Parkway runs for miles of that shade and is the obvious choice. McKinley Park's rose garden is the prettier one, peaking through April and May. The Victorian streets of Midtown and East Sacramento close the trees over the road entirely. Old Sacramento's boardwalks and iron frontages photograph well early, before the crowds. And the Capitol grounds are an arboretum in their own right, planted with trees from around the world.

When in the year is best?

April and October, when the canopy is at its best. Sacramento's tree cover is among the densest of any American city, and for maternity work that matters more than it sounds — it turns hard afternoon sun into something usable a full hour before open valley ground becomes workable. Midsummer sessions move to the last hour of light.

Forty minutes is a fair drive. Studio or outdoors?

Both are genuinely on the table, which is not true of every town on this list. Forty minutes is close enough that the gown wardrobe is a real option rather than a theoretical one. A good number of Sacramento families photograph outdoors in April or October and come to the studio in the months either side, which gives two quite different sets of pictures.

We do not want a soft-focus field. What else is there?

The Midtown alleys — brick, iron and murals — are the answer, and they are the reason Sacramento suits a maternity session better than most cities its size. Land Park has the ponds and the old oaks if you want green but not open. Sacramento has genuine variety in it, which means the pictures can look like a choice rather than a default.
