The Studio

Worth the drive to Lodi

The Jesica Allen Photography studio in Lodi, CA, serving Sacramento families

A world-class 3,000 square foot studio in the heart of downtown Lodi, built entirely around families — a private kitchenette, a private family living room, and a private changing and feeding room, plus a children's make-believe playspace to keep little ones happy through the session.

For family sessions the space is what matters — room enough to photograph three generations without anyone pressed against a wall, a lounge for whoever is not in front of the camera, and a playspace that buys the twenty minutes small children will not otherwise give you. Sacramento families arrive, settle in, and leave the rest to Jesica.

Sacramento

A little about Sacramento

Sacramento is the City of Trees in earnest, with one of the densest urban canopies in the country, and that canopy is why family sessions hold together there in the late afternoon when open ground has long since gone harsh.

The American River Parkway runs for miles and is the reliable choice. The prettier ones are McKinley Park, the rose garden at its centre, and the Victorian streets of East Sacramento and Land Park where the trees close over the road completely. Old Sacramento's boardwalks work early in the day, before the crowds arrive.

Sacramento is about forty minutes north of the studio. Families here tend to photograph outdoors in April or October, when the canopy is at its best, and come to the studio through the winter — which is a sensible rhythm and one that gives two very different sets of pictures.

For families with children of very different ages — a teenager and a toddler in the same frame — Sacramento's variety is the useful thing. Land Park has the ponds and the old oaks and something for a small child to look at; the Capitol grounds are planted as an arboretum with trees from all over the world; the Midtown alleys give brick and murals for an older child who has firm opinions about not standing in a meadow. Covering two of those in one session is straightforward, and it is often the difference between one child cooperating and all of them.

We had such a wonderful experience with our family portraits. Jessica was incredibly sweet, patient, and attentive — especially with our six-month-old.

Sacramento — good to know

Do you photograph Sacramento families?

Yes — Sacramento is part of our core service area, about 40 minutes north of Lodi. Sacramento families book family sessions here every month.

Where do Sacramento family sessions take place?

Either in the private Lodi studio or outdoors around Sacramento and the Central Valley — whichever suits the look you want. Studio sessions have the wardrobe and the controlled light; outdoor sessions have the setting your family already knows.

When should Sacramento families book a family session?

Any time of year. Autumn is the busiest for outdoor family sessions around Sacramento, so families wanting that light book it by late summer.

Where do family sessions happen in Sacramento?

Sacramento earns the City of Trees name in earnest, and family sessions are the better for it. The American River Parkway is the reliable choice, with miles of shade. McKinley Park and the rose garden at its centre are prettier. The Victorian streets of East Sacramento and Land Park close the trees over the road completely. Old Sacramento's boardwalks work early in the day, before the crowds arrive.

Our children are very different ages. Does that work here?

Better here than most places, and Sacramento's variety is the reason. Land Park has ponds and old oaks and something for a small child to actually look at; the Midtown alleys give brick and murals for an older child with firm opinions about not standing in a meadow. Covering two of those in one session is straightforward, and it is often the difference between one child cooperating and all of them.

When should we book?

April or October for outdoors, when the canopy holds the late afternoon together long after open ground has gone harsh. Sacramento families tend to photograph outdoors in those two windows and come to the studio through the winter, which is a sensible rhythm and gives two very different sets of pictures rather than the same one twice.

How long does a session take, with the drive?

An hour to ninety minutes on the ground, led by the children rather than a shot list, plus about forty minutes each way. Most Sacramento families treat it as a half day and plan something afterwards rather than driving straight home — which, with small children, is usually the better end to the afternoon anyway.
