The Studio

Worth the drive to Lodi

The Jesica Allen Photography studio in Lodi, CA, serving Auburn families

A world-class 3,000 square foot studio in the heart of downtown Lodi, built entirely around families — a private kitchenette, a private family living room, and a private changing and feeding room, plus a children's make-believe playspace to keep little ones happy through the session.

For family sessions the space is what matters — room enough to photograph three generations without anyone pressed against a wall, a lounge for whoever is not in front of the camera, and a playspace that buys the twenty minutes small children will not otherwise give you. Auburn families arrive, settle in, and leave the rest to Jesica.

Auburn

A little about Auburn

Auburn is a gold rush town that stayed, and it is hard not to be charmed by it. Gold was found here in May 1848, the camp became a town of fifteen hundred within the year, and Placer County made it the county seat in 1851. Old Town sits on the same ground, the streets follow the footpaths the miners wore, and the 1890s courthouse with its clock tower still stands over all of it.

That makes unusually good ground for family photographs, because there is something to look at. Brick, timber and iron give a background with age in it rather than open field, and Old Town is small enough to walk end to end with children without anyone being carried the last of it. It is the rare downtown that entertains a four-year-old and an adult equally.

The American River canyon is twenty minutes away and a different proposition entirely. The Confluence, where the North and Middle Forks meet, gives water and rock and elevation together; the easy riverside paths suit families who want the wide frames without the climb, and the oak woodland above gives shade when the canyon floor is too bright.

Auburn is about an hour and fifteen minutes from the studio, so a session here is a day rather than an errand — which suits some families and not others. Jesica is up in this country often and is always glad of the excuse; late afternoon is the hour in both settings, and the canyon empties as it cools. Families who would rather not make the drive photograph in the Lodi studio instead — the same session indoors, and with a baby along usually the easier one.

We had such a wonderful experience with our family portraits. Jessica was incredibly sweet, patient, and attentive — especially with our six-month-old.

Auburn — good to know

Do you photograph Auburn families?

Yes — Auburn is part of our core service area, about an hour and fifteen minutes north-east of Lodi. Auburn families book family sessions here every month.

Where do Auburn family sessions take place?

Either in the private Lodi studio or outdoors around Auburn and the Central Valley — whichever suits the look you want. Studio sessions have the wardrobe and the controlled light; outdoor sessions have the setting your family already knows.

When should Auburn families book a family session?

Any time of year. Autumn is the busiest for outdoor family sessions around Auburn, so families wanting that light book it by late summer.

Where do family sessions happen in Auburn?

Old Town is the obvious pleasure — it climbs the hill below the Placer County Courthouse in brick and iron and gold rush frontage, and it is one of the most characterful few blocks in Northern California. The Auburn State Recreation Area and the Confluence give canyon, river and real scale for something wilder.

Is Old Town good with children?

Delightfully so. It is walkable, it climbs, there is somewhere to eat at the end of it, and there is genuinely something to look at on every block — which with small children is most of the battle. A child who is interested in where they are is far easier to photograph than one being asked to stand still.

When should we book?

Spring or October. October is the one most families want, for the low gold light and the cards that follow, so hold a date over the summer if you can. The canyon in spring is quieter and every bit as beautiful, and it is the underbooked half of the year.

What about the drive?

An hour and a quarter, so Auburn sessions are planned deliberately rather than squeezed in — which honestly produces better photographs than convenience does. Most families make a day of it, and Auburn is a lovely place to spend one either side of the camera.
