The Studio

Worth the drive to Lodi

The Jesica Allen Photography studio in Lodi, CA, serving Lathrop families

A world-class 3,000 square foot studio in the heart of downtown Lodi, built entirely around families — a private kitchenette, a private family living room, and a private changing and feeding room, plus a children's make-believe playspace to keep little ones happy through the session.

For family sessions the space is what matters — room enough to photograph three generations without anyone pressed against a wall, a lounge for whoever is not in front of the camera, and a playspace that buys the twenty minutes small children will not otherwise give you. Lathrop families arrive, settle in, and leave the rest to Jesica.

A little about Lathrop

Lathrop has changed faster than any town on this list. River Islands has put thousands of homes on the San Joaquin's edge in barely a decade, mostly bought by young families out of the Bay Area, and the place is still becoming what it will be.

The beauty is water rather than architecture: the river frontage, the lakes cut through the development, and long open sky in every direction. On a clear evening the light across that water is as good as anywhere in the county.

It is also flat, open and easy underfoot, which matters more with small children than a prettier but more awkward setting would. The studio is about twenty-five minutes north for the months when standing by a river is nobody's idea of an afternoon out.

The history is better than the newness suggests: this began as Wilson's Station, and it is here because Leland Stanford, in dispute with Stockton, took the railroad around the city and named the new stop for his brother-in-law, Charles Lathrop. It was a division point by 1871, quiet for most of a century, and only incorporated in 1989. River Islands — 4,800 acres behind wide levees — put the town back on the map in a decade. The levee paths are flat, wide and stroller-friendly, which with three children under six is worth more than a prettier setting.

My husband and I had newborn photography done by Jesica and she is so professional, friendly, and approachable. We love, love, LOVE the photos we had done. She is very good at directing us in the pictures — her years of experience really show.
