The Studio

A world-class 3,000 square foot studio in the heart of downtown Lodi, built entirely around families — a private kitchenette, a private family living room, and a private changing and feeding room, plus a children's make-believe playspace to keep little ones happy through the session.
For family sessions the space is what matters — room enough to photograph three generations without anyone pressed against a wall, a lounge for whoever is not in front of the camera, and a playspace that buys the twenty minutes small children will not otherwise give you. Bay Area families arrive, settle in, and leave the rest to Jesica.

A little about the Bay Area
The Bay Area is roughly ninety minutes west over the Altamont, and families come from it for two reasons: studio space at home is scarce and expensive, and a session in the valley is far easier to gather grandparents for than one in the city.
It is one of the most photographed places on earth, so families arrive knowing what they want. What they generally cannot get at home is unhurried time in a large private room with everybody in it — which is precisely what a family session here is.
Because it is a real drive, Bay Area family sessions are planned around a visit rather than squeezed into a Saturday. Many stay for Lodi's wine country afterwards and make a day of it, which is a better use of ninety minutes than the drive back at rush hour.
The reason this drive gets made is usually gathering rather than geography. Getting four households into one place at one time is the hard part of any extended-family portrait, and a studio in the valley is a far easier meeting point than anywhere in the city — parking is free and outside the door, there is room for ten people and a lounge for whoever is not in front of the camera, and nobody is paying for a garage by the hour. Most of these are booked around a holiday or a visit, months ahead, because that is when everyone is already in the same county.

How big a group can you photograph?
Comfortably ten and more with notice. The full group is photographed early while everybody is fresh, then broken into smaller combinations — grandparents with each set of grandchildren, the siblings, each family alone — so nobody stands about. Clothing is coordinated as a palette rather than a uniform, and that is settled before the day.
How should we plan it?
Around a visit rather than squeezed into a Saturday. Ninety minutes over the Altamont is a real drive, so Bay Area family sessions work best pinned to a weekend when everyone is already together. Many stay for Lodi's wine country afterwards, which makes an afternoon of it rather than a round trip.
