The Studio

Worth the drive to Lodi

The Jesica Allen Photography studio in Lodi, CA, serving Folsom families

A world-class 3,000 square foot studio in the heart of downtown Lodi, built entirely around families — a private kitchenette, a private family living room, and a private changing and feeding room, plus a children's make-believe playspace to keep little ones happy through the session.

For family sessions the space is what matters — room enough to photograph three generations without anyone pressed against a wall, a lounge for whoever is not in front of the camera, and a playspace that buys the twenty minutes small children will not otherwise give you. Folsom families arrive, settle in, and leave the rest to Jesica.

Folsom

A little about Folsom

Folsom is a gold rush town that kept its shape. Sutter Street runs on its original line, and the district around it has been preserved rather than replaced: Leidesdorff Plaza, the railroad turntable and depot, and the truss bridge over the American River.

It is the prettiest walkable downtown within an hour of the studio, and it is genuinely good for families — there is somewhere to eat afterwards, something for children to look at, and a monthly calendar of markets and concerts that means the street is usually alive.

Folsom Lake gives family portraits water, granite and elevation in a single frame, which is rare this side of the foothills. Folsom is about forty-five minutes from the studio, so sessions here are planned deliberately and usually around the light rather than the diary.

Sutter Street is the reason to bring children rather than the obstacle. There is a railroad turntable and a depot to look at, a bridge to cross, ice cream at the end of it, and a monthly calendar of markets and concerts that means the street is alive rather than staged. Photograph it early on a weekday and it is empty; photograph it on a Saturday and it is full, which suits some families better. The lake ten minutes away gives the wide, quiet frames at the end of the day. Two settings, one short drive between them.

We had such a wonderful experience with our family portraits. Jessica was incredibly sweet, patient, and attentive — especially with our six-month-old.

Folsom — good to know

Do you photograph Folsom families?

Yes — Folsom is part of our core service area, about 45 minutes northeast of Lodi. Folsom families book family sessions here every month.

Where do Folsom family sessions take place?

Either in the private Lodi studio or outdoors around Folsom and the Central Valley — whichever suits the look you want. Studio sessions have the wardrobe and the controlled light; outdoor sessions have the setting your family already knows.

When should Folsom families book a family session?

Any time of year. Autumn is the busiest for outdoor family sessions around Folsom, so families wanting that light book it by late summer.

Where do family sessions happen in Folsom?

Sutter Street and the historic district, which is the prettiest walkable downtown within an hour of the studio and genuinely good with children. Or Folsom Lake, ten minutes away, for water, granite and elevation in one frame. Most families do both, because the drive between them is nothing.

Is Sutter Street good with children?

It is the reason to bring them rather than the obstacle. There is a railroad turntable and a depot to look at, a bridge to cross, ice cream at the end of it, and a monthly calendar of markets and concerts that keeps the street alive rather than staged. Children have somewhere to go, which is most of the battle.

Should we come on a weekday or a Saturday?

Either, and it genuinely changes the pictures. Photograph early on a weekday and the street is empty and the light comes straight down it. Photograph on a Saturday and it is full of people and markets, which suits some families far better. Say which you would prefer and the session is built around it.

Can we do the lake as well?

Yes, and most Folsom families do. Sutter Street for the texture and the character, then ten minutes to the lake for the wide, quiet frames at the end of the day. Two settings, one short drive, and a set of photographs that actually looks like the place you live.
