A little about Galt
Galt is fifteen minutes from the studio and the most agricultural town on this list — oak country giving way to open farmland, with an open-air market that has drawn people here every week for generations.
The downtown is small and unpretentious, a few low blocks and a park, and it is the kind of main street where the same families have run the same shops for thirty years. It is not grand and does not pretend to be, which is its own kind of charm in a photograph.
The real draw for maternity work is what surrounds it: uninterrupted golden hour with nothing in the background to argue with, and oaks for structure when a frame needs it. Being fifteen minutes out also means a session can be moved to the following evening if the light does not come good, which is a luxury the further towns do not have.
There is more history here than the frontages let on. The Central Pacific laid the town out in 1869, the Brewster Building of 1882 on Fourth Street is on the National Register, and the McFarland ranch on the edge of town is a living history museum in a house of well over a century. The market — Tuesdays and Wednesdays, among the largest outdoor markets in California and drawing something like three quarters of a million people a year — is the reason a town this size has a cookie company and a tasting room in its old brick.
