Galt is the closest of these towns to the studio, about fifteen minutes up the highway, and the most agricultural in character — oak country giving way to open farmland, with an open-air market twice a week that has been a fixture here for generations and still draws people from three counties.

It is a small downtown and an honest one: a few blocks of low frontages, a park, and the kind of main street where the same families have run the same businesses for thirty years. Nobody would call it grand. It is, however, the sort of place where a photograph of a family standing in it means something to them.

Proximity matters more than it sounds for newborn work. Sessions are held against a due date rather than a calendar slot, so being fifteen minutes out means a Galt family can take a date at short notice when the baby arrives early — which is most of the time.

Galt is older than it looks. The Central Pacific laid the town out in 1869 and named it, at a local rancher's request, after his home town in Canada; the Brewster Building of 1882 still stands on Fourth Street and is on the National Register; and the McFarland ranch on the edge of town is now a living history museum in a house well over a century old. The market runs Tuesdays and Wednesdays and pulls something like three quarters of a million people a year — remarkable for a town this size, and the reason Galt feels busier than its population suggests.
