A world-class 3,000 square foot studio in the heart of downtown Lodi, built entirely around families — a private kitchenette, a private family living room, and a private changing and feeding room, plus a children's make-believe playspace to keep little ones happy through the session.
For newborn sessions the room is the whole point: held at eighty degrees, sound kept low, and every wrap, headband and prop laid out before you arrive. Nothing has to be fetched, and nobody has to wait with a cold baby. Arrive, settle in, and leave the rest to Jesica.

A little about Lodi
Lodi grows more Zinfandel than anywhere else in California — better than forty per cent of the state's crop, across eighty-five wineries, with the highest concentration of old vines anywhere in California. Some of those vines went into the ground before the studio's building was built, and they are the reason a town this size has a downtown worth an afternoon.
School Street is the heart of it. The revitalisation in the late nineties laid brick roadway and gold-inlaid sidewalks and planted sycamores that are now thirty feet tall, and it all runs up to the Mission Arch — forty feet of 1907 masonry with a gold-leafed California bear on top. Walk it on a wine-stroll evening and it is hard to believe you are in the middle of the valley.
Newborn sessions happen five minutes from all of it, in the studio, because newborn work needs steady heat and a controlled room rather than a pretty street. But the street is there afterwards, and a great many Lodi families make an afternoon of it — the session, then lunch downtown, then home before the baby wakes properly.
Worth knowing if you are new here: the vineyards are not scenery so much as the town's working calendar. Crush runs from late August into October and the whole place smells of it, the Grape Festival fills the fairgrounds every September, and Micke Grove's gardens and zoo are ten minutes out — the first outing a great many Lodi babies are taken on. None of it touches a newborn session, which happens indoors at eighty degrees. But it is the town these photographs will be looked at in twenty years from now, and it is a good one to be from.

How old should the baby be?
Between five and fourteen days is the window everyone aims for. Babies that age still curl into the shapes they held before they were born and sleep through most of the session, which is what makes those photographs look the way they do. Your date is held against your due date rather than a calendar slot, so it moves when the baby does. Older than a fortnight is still very much worth photographing — it simply becomes a different, more awake set of pictures.
Could you photograph the baby at our house instead?
No, and it is a deliberate rule rather than a preference. Newborn work needs a room held near eighty degrees, light that does not change while you work, and every wrap, prop and beanbag within arm's reach. A Lodi living room cannot hold heat or light steadily for three hours, and a cold baby will not settle into a single one of those poses. The studio exists to solve exactly that.
How long does it take, and can our other children come?
Two to three hours, led entirely by the baby rather than the clock — there are feeds and changes built into that, and nobody is rushed. Siblings are very welcome and are usually photographed in the first half hour while they are still fresh, then handed to a grandparent for the rest. Bring whoever you want in the pictures and let the rest of the day go.
